Whiskey in the Jar

Posted on Nov 8th, 2008 by Annemieke : Similarity Annemieke

There is one song that just can not be left out here. Whiskey in the Jar of Thin Lizzy.

That voice of Phil Lynott is just so amazing, so special. It was one of my first singles and I played it many, many, many times.

And still, if I hear those first notes, then wow, just wow.

Thin Lizzy-Whiskey in the jar

As I was goin over the cork and kerry mountains
I saw captain farrell and his money he was countin
I first produced my pistol and then produced my rapier
I said stand and deliver or the devil he may take ya

Musha ring dum a doo dum a da
Whack for my daddy-o
Whack for my daddy-o
Theres whiskey in the jar-o

I took all of his money and it was a pretty penny
I took all of his money and I brought it home to molly
She swore that shed love me, never would she leave me
But the devil take that woman for you know she tricked me easy

Being drunk and weary I went to mollys chamber
Takin my money with me and I never knew the danger
For about six or maybe seven in walked captain farrell
I jumped up, fired off my pistols and I shot him with both barrels

Now some men like the fishin and some men like the fowlin
And some men like ta hear a cannon ball a roarin
Me I like sleepin specially in my mollys chamber
But here I am in prison, here I am with a ball and chain yeah

It's a toss up between Thin Lizzy's version or Metallica's version. I suppose a lot of it has to do with what you're in the mood for. Thx. Michael.

I never heard Metallica's version, I guess I never wanted to listen to it because it might differ to much from my treasured version of Thin Lizzy. That is the problem with listening to the same recording too much. It has become a standard and all others will fail.

But as my son also asked me if I uploaded Metallica's version, I guess I will have to listen all the way to it once. And indeed, I can definitely think of a mood that Metallica's version might fit.
