Erbarme dich

My other favorite aria from the Matthew passion is the one that is considered the most beautiful aria by most people. It is sang by male as well as by female altsingers. I always found it a little odd at first to hear a man sing so high, but I got used to it. And after all, Bach wrote all aria's for male voices.
Some prefere one above the other, but I like both. As long as it is done in a certain considerate way, where the violin merges together with the voice.
On Youtube I found a recording of a male singer, Andreas Scholl, which I found very moving.
(Unfortunately the video is removed from Youtube)

I love it when you share this beautiful music with us :)
I am glad you liked it. I must say it is a great discovery tour, finding video's on Youtube. Especially because I am looking for just tiny pieces from the big ocean of classical music.
It would have taken me forever to find it the way I used to search, in libraries and music stores. Especially with this aria, Erbarme dich, I could never seem to find what I was looking for.
But this recording, with the voice of Andreas Scholl, comes pretty close. I think he has the perfect voice to sing this aria.
Thank you so much for this , as this is such a healing song to me.
It moves me so.
I have been under some stress , and this just takes me away.
I think of me out in a beautiful countryside , and I am dancing gracefully within the sweet colours of the garden , the Sky is a brilliant blue ,birds are there dancing with me too. The sun is shining , and warms my heart, with pure everlasting , and life, and love .
Thank you for making my day.
Thank you.
Love,
Lori
Bach is such a genius in sacred music. Do you know his mass in B minor? I wrote about a multi-media production about here.
This is what a critic wrote about Bachs Mass in B minor:
About Bachs Mass in B minor:
“Like a towering mountain made from primal rock, J.S. Bach's 'Mass in b-Minor' dominates the musical landscape. High above the clouds we see his peak being shone on by Infinity where now other sounds are capable to pervade. The Art of Johann Sebastian Bach is the Art of his longing for Eternity. In eternal love - love for Him - we may find access - access to the love of the Temporary within Infinity, of the Limited within Eternity. A longing for the Unknown, the Mystical and Secretive, for Truth to be discovered - a longing which may be satisfied only by searching …”
Lori, I am glad to hear it is a healing song for you. So nice that you can imagen yourself in such environment.
I never have such images, I just undergo the music, but I so much enjoy the descriptions of others.
So thank you for those colourful pictures.
“A longing for the Unknown, the Mystical and Secretive, for Truth to be discovered - a longing which may be satisfied only by searching …”
Albert, wow I love that description.
I thought I did not know that Mass. But I looked and it is the same as his Hohe Messe.
It has been I while that I listened to that. But I have the CD, so I am certainly going to listen to it again soon.
